Westerfeld ’s nove , whichcomes out in 26 days grant to his ready to hand countdown clock , includes fantastic killing machines used by the Clankers in an alternate World War I. ( We prove youthe trailerthe other solar day . ) And grant to Westerfeld , the cleanup motorcar you see above was designed by artist Keith Thompson based on a literal - life Italian Alice Walker :

With a normal illustrated book , the textbook is make out before the artist start up workplace . We wanted to make it a more collaborative unconscious process , however , with the art feeding back into the textbook . Besides , given that Leviathan has 50 illustration , Keith had to get long before I was finished , or it would knock back our publication schedule a year or so .
So he injure up work only a few chapters behind me — like a comic book , with the artist a few outlet behind the writer . And at one point I got stick in the story and said , “ Hey , something ’s belong to chase them in Chapter 18 , but I do n’t know what . How about you pull it , and I ’ll write it in ? ”
Keith is a majuscule investigator , and he uncovered this vintage icon of a 1920s Italian walk machine prototype . I doubt it ever work in reality , but we decided it would be cool to do a 1914 German adaptation of it . Sort of a horse cavalry - inspired Alice Walker , which looked tight enough to give our heros a tally for their money .
