For the first time ever , BBC nature photographers have captured footage of an underwater brine icicle ( also roll in the hay as a “ brinicle ” ) slowly expound underneath the icing of Antarctica ’s Little Razorback Island . woefulness to be a sea star or urchin that encounter this briny deathtrap !
The trip to this filming location was precarious , as the diver had to tug sullen , current - resistant cameras while sail narrow-minded distribution channel between the ice and ocean floor . In winter , the atmosphere temperature above the ocean frappe can be below -20C , whereas the sea water supply is only about -1.9C. hotness flow from the warmer sea up to the very stale tune , imprint new ice from the bottom . The common salt in this new formed ice is concentrated and pushed into the brine channels . And because it is very cold and salty , it is denser than the water to a lower place .
The result is the brine cesspool in a descending feather . But as this extremely cold brine leaves the sea ice , it freezes the relatively fresh saltwater it fare in contact with . This forms a thin metro of ice around the descending feather , which grows into what has been called a brinicle .
