all right , so now you know the dim part . But there are a lot of surprisingly cool parting too , not the least of which is seeing Diesel ’s slow - burn smile before he busts some heads . Kassovitz has said that before the edit butchery , the film was run to focus a lot more on the predicament of next refugees , and luckily a circle of incredibly interesting world - building related to that melodic theme is still in the film . If you take your eyes off the flamey - burney for a second , you ’ll notice that Italian sandwich Toorop ( Diesel ) is trekking from Russia to Mongolia , then taking his consignment ( virgin lady and badass protector Yeoh ) through Kazakhstan , then Russia , then across the Bering Straight via illegal sub ( in a seriously amazing scene ) , down through Canada and into New York City . Along the way of life , we are treated to some very compelling image of what the future might hold , in geopolitical terms .
Toorop is read his human shipment on a refugee path to America , since they ’re trying to go stealth . In one amazing setting , the mobster who hire Toorop for the smuggling job tells him to “ wait for a machine ” to pick him up . We ’re not sure what to gestate , but it ’s sure enough not a saloon cover in homebrew armor being lowered slowly out of the sky on a giant magnet attach to a helicopter . Toorop gets in , crank up up some Russian euphony on the on - board computer , and gets flown over the Russian urban wasteland via helicopter attracter . That view alone , of the shit car hanging by a chain over a city being eat up by its own corrupt industry , is almost worth the price of admission price . It absolutely captures the ambiance Kassovitz was adjudicate for : A world where technologies have supercharge for the few , but where most are living with cobble - together mech in place rule by mobsters .
In Kassovitz ’ future , passports are implanted and borders are patrolled by UAVs . Russian refugees run across the frozen icy ocean to get through stealth subs that will only rise for two arcminute so they are n’t caught on satellite . And every open public area is bath in surveillance , so it ’s impossible to be altogether stealth . America , in Kassovitz ’ imaginativeness , is ruled by spiritual corporations who cheat for power the way mafia gangs do in Russia . Aurora , our pure mother , is the outcome of an experimentation by one such American religion , whose leader ( played by the astonishing Charlotte Rampling ) has ante up a famous scientist to make her so she can claim a “ miracle ” for her religion . There ’s a with child and crazy consequence where Rampling handle her panel elbow room full of toady and yell about how she wants to be the “ most powerful religion in the Earth , ” and Aurora will help oneself her do it . I care the idea that our Virgin Mary is basically the genetically - engineer institution of a cheap-jack . But regrettably Kassovitz wants her to be a genuine Virgin Mary too . That ’s why she has the power of using her poofy lips and bluest eyes to conciliate all the harden men around her — and to tell the time to come , possibly , and feel other people ’s pain and hooey like that . She ’s your basic Catholic fable lady , totally out of place in a movie about mercenary , terrorists , refugees , and evil religions .
Of course , Aurora the Virgin peeress also has to ransom our mercenary Toorop , whom she literally defeat and institute back to life ( with the assistance of a mad scientist / cyborg toy by the Merovingian from The Matrix ) . So lemme see : We ’ve got a Virgin Mary lady , a redemption via resurrection , a false prophet whose plans are foiled , and wait for it . . . we ’ve got a final weird finale where the once - leather - clap Toorop is in like ashen linen paper and caring for the virgin - bear little girls . WTF Kassovitz ? The film director claim he wanted his movie to permit his characters to have “ metaphysical experiences . ” That ’s great . How about if I just pull an Obi Wan on you and say , with a undulation of my hand , “ These are not the metaphysical experiences you were looking for . ”
