Had the Wright Brothers unwisely chosen to build their original flyer from concrete , their names credibly would n’t have extend down in the account books . ButSouth Dakota School of Mines & Technologystudents David Haberman and Tyler Pojanowski did , and were the first to fly and safely bring down an 18 pound remote control concrete aircraft .
Technically they were beaten to the skies by an early concrete plane built in Florida , but it crashed and was destroyed on landing , whereas David and Tyler ’s planer will hold up to fly another day . Just not gracefully , since the exam flight was incredibly unstable and a fierce landing result in a cracked backstage and fuselage — but the aeroplane will vanish again with modest fixing .
Building a full - sized aircraft from concrete is still totally impractical with current technologies . But this small rendering , with its 40 - inch wingspan , could head to further developments in concrete gain it strong , light and easier to shape with when it comes to building structures .
