Like his friend Winston Churchill , Roosevelt write many of his speeches without the economic aid of speechwriters . War would be declare a day later on December 9th , exactly 73 years ago today .

This document , which reside at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum , shows the various edits made by the President during a first pass .

Remarkably , the word “ infamy ” was absent from the first version . Instead , he planned to set about the actor’s line by say it would be a “ date which will last in world history . ” Which would have been all sort of blah ; it ’s rather astonishing to believe about the shock this single word had on the exponent of this spoken language and its subsequent historical temptingness .

In the chess opening sentence , the President also changed “ simultaneously ” to “ suddenly , ” and at one point he reckon putting the discussion “ without warn ” at the final stage of the sentence , but he later on crossed them out .

[ This ] exchange in the first line of the words was tell . After a decade of isolationist sentiment , Roosevelt could not do what Woodrow Wilson did during World War I : advance a multilayered argument for American involvement , “ agoniz[ing ] over the violence of war , ” and “ advanc[ing ] idealistic and eminent goals to justify participation . ”

rather , as [ historian Emily ] Rosenberg reason , FDR stressed a simple , powerful narrative , tapping into retiring American legends . He juxtaposed the “ treachery ” and deception of the attack with the “ righteous might ” of the hoi polloi who would respond , keeping the message short and uncomplicated , and asking for immediate action .

Also , FDR made sure that the fire on Hawaii , as a U.S. district , was front - and - center , even pop off so far as to identify Oahu as an “ American island ” in suit listeners were n’t up to speed on their geography . As you’re able to see from his note , he scratched out mention of the cooccurring attack on the Philippines ( a U.S. colony ) to stress that this was an unprovoked attack on American soil .

He also observe that the distance from Japan to Hawaii meant that the attack must have been project “ many days ago . ” Accordingly , he changed the text to read , “ many days or even week ago . ” But historian now know that the Japanese had considered a surprisal attack on Pearl Harbor for many years .
