After the attack on Pearl Harbor , Franklin Roosevelt crafted his rousing “ Day of Infamy ” spoken communication . Looking at the first draft , you may see the few annotating and edits he made to it , including some critical alterations that made all the difference .
Like his friend Winston Churchill , Roosevelt write many of his speeches without the economic aid of speechwriters . After the surprisal attack by the Japanese on December 7th , 1941 , he get to go on a speech that would be delivered to the American public ( and the world , for that topic ) over the radio receiver the next mean solar day . rather , as [ historian Emily ] Rosenberg reason , FDR stressed a simple , powerful narrative , tapping into retiring American legends . He juxtaposed the “ treachery ” and deception of the attack with the “ righteous might ” of the hoi polloi who would respond , keeping the message short and uncomplicated , and asking for immediate action .
Also , FDR made sure that the fire on Hawaii , as a U.S. district , was front - and - center , even pop off so far as to identify Oahu as an “ American island ” in suit listeners were n’t up to speed on their geography .
