We have identified well over a hundred different gesture used by chimpanzee , more than enough to bring out the order Primates use gestural communicating much like we do . But it ’s what the chimps are enjoin with their hands that ’s truly fascinating .
Dr. Anna Roberts of the UK ’s Stirling University spent months in Uganda studying the hand gestures used by chimpanzees to communicate with each other . She identified about 20 to 30 gestures that dealt with conception from nursing and feed to fight and hostility , plus a caboodle to do with sex . While these finding are n’t exactly new — other researcher have identify over a hundred such gestures in chimps and other primates over the past few geezerhood — what sets this Modern datum apart is how so many of the Pan troglodytes ’ gestures resemble those of homo .
Dr. Roberts found that at least a third of the chimps ’ gesture were like to those of humans and mean broadly the same affair . Manual gesture in chimpanzees is controlled by the same brain structures as speech in the human brain . ”
And it is n’t just that chimpanzees come about to move and distort their hand in manner interchangeable to how humans do . Rather , it ’s that these gesture take shape part of a larger communicating apparatus that is strikingly like how we construe each other ’s nonverbal communication , as Dr. Roberts explain :
