The Mongol saiga population was estimated at a shaky 10,000 in December 2016 , before their numbers plummet by 2,500 .

The agent of destruction ? A farm animal virus known as   peste des petits ruminant ( PPR ) , also knight the butt pest . The computer virus   is a highly contagious animal disease that typically affects goats and other little stock , killing 30 to 70 percent of infected brute . It was first report in Ivory Coast back in 1942 . Since then it has travel across Africa and Asia , though outbreaks in wild creature have been rare and it ’s never been seen in antelopes before .

The Saiga tatarica , known for their humped nose , voiced tawny pelage , and slender legs , are   attractively odd animate being on the brink of quenching . Habitat loss , illegal hunting , and outbreaks have drastically slashed their universe numbers .

alas , this is n’t the first clip the saiga have beenfelledin large quantities . In 2010 , around 12,000 Saiga tatarica suddenly drop dead in Kazakhstan . In 2012 , another 1,000 . Then in 2015 , more than 200,000 pall within two weeks due to   a bacterial infection that fly half the mintage .

“ The office is tragic and widespread , ” say Dr Amanda Fine , a veterinarian and associate director of the WCS Wildlife Health Program in Asia , in astatement . “ Along with the impingement to the saiga population , this issue has the electric potential to make cascading   ruinous consequences on the ecosystem . ”

For deterrent example , ibex and argali may be affected by the   mass die - off , and C. P. Snow leopard may be spite by   the diminished prey infrastructure .

The antelope appeared to be in poor shape before they were strike with the goat pest , as wintertime is a strenuous season to fight off a virus   – their resistance is small and their susceptibility to disease is high . The mintage is listed as critically endangered by theIUCN ’s RedList . These roving mammals can migrate 72 miles a solar day , with their signature nose trickle out dust during the dry summer months and warming dusty air during the frigid wintertime month .
