In a landmark case , the European Court of Human Rights ( ECHR ) has ruled that authority in Switzerland have violated the human rights of a grouping of Swiss women by not doing enough to stop climate change .
April 9 saw rulings on three clime change cases in the court , expedited through the process after being considered as urgent . Two of the cases – one brought by a former Gallic mayor against France and the other by a group of Lusitanian youth against Portugal and 32 other European governments – were throw out .
But KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz ( Senior Women for Climate Protection ) , a group of older Swiss cleaning woman , many of whom are over the age of 70 , insure success . They ’d been debate that Swiss authorities were n’t taking enough military action to undertake mood change , and in doing so , were ravish their human rightfield by leaving them vulnerable to the effects of climate change - inducedheatwaves .

The ECHRagreed , ruling that “ the Swiss Confederation had fail to comply with its duties under the Convention concerning climate modification ” and had offend the right to respect for secret and kin life history under the European Convention of Human Rights .
Though the ruling does n’t seem to have gone down especially well with Switzerland’slargest political party , it ’s safe to say members of KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz seem moderately glad . As reported byReuters , one of the group ’s leadership , Rosmarie Wydler - Waelti , said : " We still ca n’t really consider it . We keep ask our attorney , ' is that correct ? ' And they tell us it ’s the most you could have had . The big triumph possible . "
President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd react to the opinion : " I would like to know what the grounds for it are . Sustainability is very important to Switzerland , biodiversity is very important to Switzerland , thenet zero targetis very important to Switzerland . We are working on those and will continue to work on them with all our posture . This opinion does nothing to switch that . "
In somewhat coincidental timing , astatementreleased a twenty-four hour period after the ruling herald thatSwitzerlandwill be renewing its contribution to the Green Climate Fund , a investment trust that ’s part of a United Nations enterprisingness to palliate climate modification in grow country .
Whilst it ’s a momentous case for the ECHR , this is n’t the first clock time people have endeavor to bring authorities to justice for clime inaction – and won .
