We ’re still trying to map the solar system ’s huge KO’d orbit beyond Neptune . It ’s teeming with space stone , some of which are many land mile across , and could at some item become meteors flash towards Earth .
The outer edges of the solar system is domicile to countless rock’n’roll make out as trans - Neptunian object , or TNOs . Of naturally , the most noted of these is the former major planet Pluto – in fact , for over sixty years , it was the only trans - Neptunian object we knew about other than its Sun Myung Moon Charon . In the last two decade , we ’ve discovered 1,000 new TNOs , and 200 of them have now earned pocket-size major planet condition .
Of course , that ’s plausibly only a little fraction of all the rocks that are out there in the Kuiper Belt , sprinkle phonograph record , and vast Oort Cloud , the three main neighborhood of the trans - Neptune solar system . The rocks are incredibly faint , with ordinary magnitude between 25 and 27 . To put that in some perspective , that sort of order of magnitude is 100 million times fainter than anything we could hope to see with the naked eye . And that ’s just the fully grown rock – the really tiny one are even fainter and even more unacceptable to detect .

Now astronomers have combed through honest-to-god Hubble Space Telescope archives to name fourteen novel TNOs . They did this by watching for grounds of slight movement of objects in the photographs , indicating the objects were in our solar system . They then combined datum about the distance and luminousness of the target to cypher out the size of it of the TNOs , as well as a rough estimate of their orbit .
The newly discovered TNOs cooking stove from 25 to 60 miles in diameter , which makes them about 2 to 4 % the size of Pluto . A specially intriguing pair appear to be in a binary orbit much like Pluto and Charon , as the two TNOs orb each other while revolving around the Sun . This first study canvas only a third of a straight degree of the sky , so there ’s enough more place to research and potentially hundreds more new TNOs to be line up .
