Like it or not , touchscreens that replace physical button in cars are n’t going away any time soon . In fact , one day your vehicle ’s intact splashboard will probably be one big CRT screen covered in weeks ’ worth of greasy fingerprint . To make them less of an annoyance , instead of having to pass over them clean with some occasional arm polishing , General Motors haspatented a new CRT screen designallowing touchscreen toerase fingerprintsall by themselves .

If your mind straightaway imagines this patent detail a robot subdivision holding a microfiber textile that extend from a gondola ’s fascia and gets to work , or even tiny windscreen wiper that spring to aliveness after every touchscreen fundamental interaction like the I that clean your windshield , you ’re way off . What GM has come up with is far more clever and unnoticeable .

In plus to red , green , and blue pixels , the advance screens would introduce an additional violet pixel that , similar to ultraviolet Christ Within , would be inconspicuous to the human eye so as not to pretend the colours and images seen on the screen . The touchscreen would also use a similarly invisible photocatalyst screen coating designed to engross certain wavelengths of light to produce a chemical chemical reaction . GM ’s patent suggests the use of a metal - oxide - based photocatalyst that would react to the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight , but since many car habituate window tinting to keep the interiors dark and nerveless , the photocatalyst ’s reaction would instead be initiated by the reddish blue pixels .

At night , when the automobile is sitting unused in the dark , or even during a cleansing cycle manually started by the driver in the day , the reddish blue pixels would change state on and trigger off the photocatalyst in the screen coating which would begin a chemic response that use moisture in the air travel to bust down the constituent materials left behind in fingerprints , as well as oil residue and grease from the fast food for thought we all guiltily quaff down in the car sometimes .

When the response stop and everything dry out , those greasy blot and fingerprints will just disappear like dust in the wind , get out clean screens ready to be messed up once again with the remnants of the morning ’s Egg McMuffin .

So when will ego - cleaning touchscreen start showing up as an selection on GM ’s vehicle ? perhaps in a few years ’ clock time , or peradventure never . For now , the technology is just at the patent DoS , and GM has n’t made any announcements as to whether it plans to pursue the engineering science as an actual feature article in succeeding vehicle , or if it ’s go to just sit around on the patent so other automakers do n’t offer it either . Hopefully , it does move beforehand with the idea because self - clean touchscreens would be a welcome upgrade on so many machine , not just cars .
