Two deputies responded to the scene on Jan. 5 andfound a vehiclethat had “left the roadway and crashed into a ditch” before filling with water, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police said a man was “found dazed and bleeding” outside the vehicle, while a woman and “small child” — whomNBC affiliate WESHidentified as her granddaughter — were still trapped inside.
Firefighters with the Palm Coast Fire Department helped the deputies enter the vehicle, which was still “just above” the water, so they could retrieve the victims, the sheriff’s office said.
Fortunately, she “was alert and conscious” when pulled from the car, authorities said.
“I can’t!” she cried at one point, before a firefighter responded, “You’re good! You’re doing great.”

All three of the car’s occupants were transported to AdventHealth-Palm Coast for treatment, according to the police. The victims’ conditions have not been released.
“Due to the actions of the deputies and the fire department, they survived this crash,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said, per WESH.
“So it could have had a very different outcome and tragic start to 2024, but instead it was a really remarkable and happy ending,” the sheriff added.
The investigation of the crash has been handed over to the Florida Highway Patrol, his office said.
