What in the hell ? Yes , it ’s horrible that someone that youthful could be that disturbed , but more importantly , how could such a disturbed , under - aged small fry get his hands on the materials to make bombs ? Well , let ’s see .
I recently learnedfrom Lt . Mike Jackson , Bomb Squad Commander of the Oklahoma City Police Department , that roughly 90 per centum of the extemporise explosive devices ( IEDs ) they take on in the field are pipework bombs . certainly enough , that ’s what this kid seems to have been intending to build . Details have been scarce , but fit in to the MSNBC piece he had in his possession “ timing and fusing devices , and other material that could have been used to make a bomb calorimeter such as fuel sources , shrapnel and plastic tubing . ” Let ’s break those down .

The Pipe
The pipework is the case for this bag of ugly , but it ’s not just so you may expect it around and keep it together . The pipe is where the press comes from , thus greatly amplifying the detonation ( and wipeout ) . The most mutual materials used are metal pipes with thread ends or PVC pipe . It sounds like this shaver had the latter , but both are well obtainable from any computer hardware store .
The Fuel Source ( Propellant )
This is the stuff that makes it go boom . I was floored by just how many unlike materials can be used . Some go better than others , but many can be obtained from computer hardware stores and farm supply storehouse . If he made friends with someone in demolition , he could have really upped the ante . I do n’t know what this cat was going to practice and I ’m not going to put forward any theories , because this is n’t a how - to , but suffice to say it ’s horrify how loose it can be .
The Shrapnel
Not all pipe bombs contain shrapnel . It takes a real special sort of asshole to include it . Shrapnel is the stuff that tears through human beings . It ’s fucking terrible . Typically screw , nail , junkie , and bolts are used . diddley like that . ( I ca n’t even talk about shrapnel without sire angry . ) When the bomb goes windfall , the shrapnel flies everywhere at very high speed and get a whole lot of impairment . Terrible .
The Fuse
The fuse is how the spark gets into the turkey and ignites it . It can be as simple-minded as pull a fuse out of a firework , the locomotive off a model roquette , or they could Kraut - set up another solution if they need a small more oomph to set the matter off ( depends on the propellant ) .
The Timing gadget
Basically , it can be as simple a clock with a mechanically skillful component . They just take to set up it so that when the alarm become off , the battery supplies a Muriel Spark bragging enough to lite the fuse . Again , available pretty much anywhere .
And that ’s how easy it can be for a sicko to scrape together a way wipe out a whole gang of innocent mass . That and a seriously fucked up mind . I ’m super thankful that this near - tragedy was stave off , but it ’s unbelievably alarming how unvoiced things like this are to actually prevent . If you ’re a parent , pay attention to your kid and what he ’s doing . This particular teenager was building this clobber in his own room ( along with a craw of weed ) .
