I did n’t realize that Microsoft had drive out the update that brought advertising to theWindows 11Start menu until I lead off to read the news show . I ’ve had recommendations turned off this full time . It flex out the same selection conceal the “ curated ” Microsoft Store apps currently inhabit on systems run theKB5036980update .
There are a few other components to this peculiar software update , but they ’re minor . thingamabob in the taskbar and on the lock blind have been meliorate and are no longer pixelated and fuzzy . alive icons have also been added to the mix .
Turn off App “Recommendations” in the Start Menu
I total from a time whenWindowswasn’tinundatedwithadvertisingand suggestion . It feels like it was a farseeing time ago because Microsoft ’s been toying withadvertisingin the Start menu since Windows 10 . I want to believe the company has caught on that plenty of user are on my wavelength . It put the item for turn off the Recommended department of the Start menu on the software update page , even bolding it .
Go to options > Personalization > Start , or use the Start carte lookup bar to open up the scene jury . Then , pick out the option to toggle off Show recommendation for tip , shortcut , new apps , and more . This will ferment off any extra depicted object and curated app suggestions . You might also consider selecting the layout choice for More peg so there are more slots for quickly pinning the apps you need to access .
As with everything in animation , there are craft - offs to become off the passport . The Start computer menu will function more like an app shelf — the equivalent to a bookshelf if you will — than an app drawer . You ’ll need to curate apps you want to be pinned there , or it will render the sheathing windowpane useless beyond the search bar .

Sadly , you ca n’t recover that part of the Start fare unless you try futzing with a third - political party app likeExplorerPatcher , StartAllBack , orStart11 . Those are some apps I ’ve see curated and advocate in varying forum . The only one I ’ve used is Stardock ’s Start11 , though I have n’t dabbled with it since I updated to Windows 11 . Perhaps I should reconsider what a third - political party Start menu could offer since Microsoft seems hellbent on serving those ads .
