It sometimes takes a second chance at love to get things right — at least that was the case forJon Cryer.

The Emmy-winning actor, who currently stars in the NBC sitcomExtended Family, tells PEOPLE that the moment he said “I do” toLisa Joynerin Mexico in 2007 was the “luckiest day of his life.”

“The key to a good marriage is 100 percent a sense of humor, because whenever there are hard things in a marriage — and there are — laughing about it makes the most wonderful difference,” Cryer shares. “It’s about having somebody in your corner no matter what, and I feel so lucky to be that guy for my wife. She has been there for me every time that has been tough for me.”

Dad to 4-year-old daughter Daisy with Joyner, Cryer also shares son Charlie, 23, with ex-wife Sarah Trigger. And though his first marriage ended in 2004, the actor still believes his previous relationships gave him invaluable lessons that helped him become the partner he is today.

“The great thing about second marriages is you know what your flaws are. They have been brought to relief, and so you hopefully have gotten some comfort with them,” he explains. “When you’re much more comfortable with yourself, you can actually love somebody a lot better, and I think my earlier relationships were always just trying to be somebody who I thought I had to be instead of just being who I am.”

Cryer, 58, and Joyner, 56, haven’t been shy about sharing their adventures together as a couple. For Cryer’s 57th birthday in April 2022, the paircelebrated the milestonein Paris and posted a sweet selfie on X (formerly Twitter) with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

In October 2020, theTwo and Half Menalum also shared an epic saga of losing his wedding bandwhile walking in the rain along the ocean in Vancouver. Luckily, it was eventually found with the help of a metal detector, and Chris Turner from The Ring Finders.

“Chris you not only found a ring. You may have saved a marriage. That ring meant so much. It has so many memories behind it. Now Jon go get it resized!” Joyner later told PEOPLE of the incident.

Joyner said that her husband “sheepishly” called her from the park as he was searching for the lost band after he was unsuccessful in finding it during his first attempt.

“I was sad, but I didn’t want to make him feel any worse because I knew how bad he felt,” she said then.

But the fact that Cryer put so much effort into finding the wedding band made Joyner “love him even more.”

“I was really happy. I was mostly happy for him because I knew he was really sad about it,” she explained. “It was meant to be. We’re not meant to lose that ring. We’ve been through too much with each other. I felt so relieved.”
