The Color Purplemovie musical is just over three months away!
On Friday, Warner Bros. Pictures shared new footage from the movie exclusively with PEOPLE, paired with interviews from the set featuring cast members, director Blitz Bazawule and producerOprah Winfreypraising the upcoming film.
“There’s nothing that’s been more important or vital to me culturally or artistically thanThe Color Purple. It is a solid base of spiritual and emotional power for me," Winfrey, 69, says in the clip. “Every woman and man who has been invisible, who has felt unseen and unvalued, this is their story.”
The star earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as Sofia in the original 1985 Steven Spielberg film.
The new footage teases a look at many of the film’s lead characters, includingHalle Baileyas Nettie,Taraji P. Hensonas Shug Avery, H.E.R. as Squeak, Danielle Brooks as Sofia,Jon Batisteas Grady andFantasia Barrinoas Celie in her feature film debut, among others.
Filmmaker Bazawule, who made his directorial debut with 2018’sThe Burial of Kojo,notes in the clip that the original movie remains “one of the cornerstones of culture, certainly Black culture.”

“It’s a story of finding yourself and living it and going after it, no matter what,” Henson, 53, notes of the film, while H.E.R., 26, adds: “You get to see all these strong women shine and be who they’re truly meant to be.”
An official description for the movie calls the film a “bold new take on the beloved classic” about “the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond.”

“As we say in our community, it fills you up so you leave feeling full,” Winfrey says in the clip, while Corey Hawkins, who plays Harpo, adds: “I feel so blessed to joinThe Color Purplefamily. It’s just an incredible piece of art.”
“It’s how filmmaking should be. Joy, excitement," director Bazawule says in the clip. “Color Purple, let’s go.”
The Color Purpleis in theaters Dec. 25.
