Dr. Frank Rubio , the first American astronaut to live in space ceaselessly for more than a class , has returned to Earth . He spent 371 sequent years on theInternational Space Station(ISS ) , eclipsing the nearly yearlong stints of spaceman Mark Vande Hei ( 355 day ) and Scott Kelly ( 340 daytime ) . The record - setting trip-up was more than twice as long as earlier schedule .

Rubio , along with Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin , touched down in rural Kazakhstan on Sept. 27 . They werepulled out of their Soyuz capsule and carried awaybecause they were unable to walk due to their poke out stay in microgravity .

Rubio , Prokopyev and Petelin arrived on the ISS aboard a Soyuz capsule on Sept. 21 , 2022 . They were due to repay to Earth on March 28 but had to remain in space after their spacecraft was hit by a piece of space rubble or meteoroid in December 2022 , whichcaused an uncorrectable radiator leak . The unrepairable capsule was returned to Earth and was replaced by another uncrewed capsule in February , which the trio used to generate home .

Due to other scheduling conflict , Rubio , Prokopyev and Petelin had to remain aboard the ISS until now . But Rubio ’s extended stay supply an unexpected chance to see more about elongated spaceflight .

" Frank ’s record - breaking time in space is not just a milestone ; it ’s a major contribution to our understanding of long - continuance space missions,“NASAAdministratorBill Nelsonsaid in astatement . " He embodies the true pioneer spirit that will pave the mode for future geographic expedition to the Moon , Mars , and beyond . "

The late track record space travel by an American was held by Vande Hei , whospent 355 consecutive days on board the ISSbetween 2021 and 2022 . But the longest - ever successive sentence spent in space was a whopping 437 days , which was set up by cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov between 1994 and 1995 .

During his foreign mission , Rubio completed more or less 5,936 cranial orbit of Earth , which equates to around 157 million miles ( 253 million km ) , or roughly 328 trip to the moon and back , fit in to NASA . He also carried out threespacewalkstotaling around 21 hours and had 28 dissimilar crewmates on the ISS .

In a Sept. 19interview on board the ISS , Rubio explained that it had been hard to be aside from his family for such a long prison term but that he had try hard to " stay positive " during his extended foreign mission . " You endeavor to just focus on the job and on the mission and remain steady , because at last , every day , you have to show up and do the oeuvre , " he said .

Rubio conducted a variety show of scientific experiments during his time in blank , including testing how bacteria behave in microgravity . But his favorite experimentation were bear out on a tomato flora . " I have it off working with that small works and experience it spring up and explicate , " he said .

It will be particularly interesting to see how well Rubio adjusts to animation back on Earth . Prolonged time in infinite can cause heftiness decadence , off-white departure , reduced eyesight and afflicted balance , and can even change the form of the Einstein . The late record - breaking mission was Rubio ’s first prison term in space , which means his body has not experienced any of these issues before . He predicts that it could take two to six calendar month to find altogether normal again .
