Zoe - Anne Barcellos :

The rip goes down the sink drain , into the sewer system .

I am not a undertaker , but I work for a medical tester / coroner . During an autopsy , most blood is drained from the decedent . This is not on purpose , but a result of gravity . after a mortician may or may not embalm , depending on the indirect request of the family .

Autopsies are done on a mesa that has a drain at one end ; this drainpipe is placed over a sump — a unconstipated sink , with a garbage disposal in it . The blood and corporeal fluid just enfeeble down the table , into the sink , and down the drain . This goes into the sewerage , like every other cesspit and privy , and ( usually ) conk to a water treatment industrial plant .

You may be think that this is biohazardous permissive waste and needs to be care for differently . [ If ] we ca n’t put oil , or chemical ( like formol ) down the drains due to regulations , why is blood not cover similarly ? I would assume because it is effectively handled by the water discussion plants . If it was n’t , I am certain the regulation would be changed .

Now anyitemsthat are dirty with blood line — thosecannotbe throw away in the regular trash . Most wear worn by the decedent is either keep for evidence or released with the decedent to the funeral home plate — even if they were bloody .

But any gauze , medical tubing , papers , etc . that have blood or bodily fluids on themmustbe throw away into a biohazardous trash . These are run along with bright red trash liners , and these are placed in a especially score box and taped unopen . These boxes are stacked up in the garage until they are cull up by a specialness garbage caller . I am not certain , but I am jolly certain they are incinerate .

Additionally anything acute or pointy — like phonograph needle , scalpel , etc.—must go into a rigid “ sharps ” container . When they are 2/3 full we just cast away these into one of the biotrash container .

The biotrash is handle other than , as , if it went to a landfill , then the blood ( and therefore the bloodborne pathogen like Hepatitis and HIV ) could be exposed to people or animals . Rain could wash it into untreated body of water systems .
